Of all the stories related to the history of this festival, the most relevant is the story related to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

 It is believed that Mother Parvati is the creator of Ganesha. According to the story, Goddess Parvati created Ganesh in the absence of Shiva from the sandalwood.
When he was taking a bath, he gave Ganesh to protect his bathroom door.

After returning to Shiva’s house, Ganesh stopped him from entering.
This led to a war between Ganesha and Shiva, and in anger, Shiva cut the head of Ganesha.

Seeing this, Mother Parvati got angry.
Seeing this, Lord Shiva promised to resurrect Ganesh
And they put the head of the yard on the fence of Ganesha. And likewise, Gajanan was born.

Although it is not known how and when Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated for the first time.
But according to historians, the first Ganesh Chaturthi festival was celebrated during the reign of Satavahana, Rashtrakut, and Chalukya.
Historical records show that Ganesh Chaturthi festival was started in Maharashtra, to promote culture and nationalism by the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

During the British rule, many leaders and freedom fighters throughout India protested against British domination.
One of these distinguished leaders was Indian nationalist, social reformer and freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
It was Tilak who brought Ganesh Chaturthi’s tradition back and changed this festival from private family festivals to a grand public event.

When Tilak started organizing Ganesh Utsav in the form of social and religious work around 1893.
He established the statue of Ganesh in the Mandap and started the tradition of immersion on the tenth day. Its purpose was to unite the people of all communities.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, the enthusiasm of the people occurs at the peak.
People install idols of Lord Ganesha in their homes, terrains, and temples.
After this, a ritual called Shodshopachar is called in 16 different ways.
This festival is not only prayer but also cultural programs like dance, singing, orchestra and theater performances.
Many community activities are also a part of the celebration.

Finally, worship is offered to Lord Ganesha with pooja.
It is known as Uttarpuraja; after this ritual, the idol is immersed in water, which is called Ganapati Immersion.
