He entered politics in 1940 as a member of a municipality in Jamkhandi and later in 1945 became president of Jamkhandi village municipality.

Later, he was appointed as a member of Jamkhandi State Legislature and as a minister of Jamkhandi State Government.

After this, in 1948 B D. Jatthi became a divan of Jamkhandi, after becoming Divan, he had maintained a good relationship with Maharaja Shankar Rao Patwardhan.

After 8 March 1948 Jamkhandi was merged with Bombay State, B D. The Jatthas returned and continued working for the lawyer for 20 consecutive months.

After the election of 1952, he became the health and labour minister of the Bombay Government, and he took up the post until the reconstruction of the state.

In 1968, B. D. Jatte was appointed as the lieutenant governor of Pondicherry. Later in 1972, he became the governor of Odisha, then in 1974 he became the Vice-President of India, and in 1977 he became president for some time after the death of Fakhruddin Ali.

His caretaker president was not less than any dispute. In April 1977, when Charan Singh (then Union Minister of the Union) decided to dissolve the assembly of 9 states, then B D. Jatri refused to obey the cabinet advice and even refused to sign his orders.

8 – 1972-74: Governor of Odisha.
9 – 1974-79: became Vice-President of India.
10 – 1977, he became the acting President of India for seven months.

Death of Basappa Dappa Jatti

B D. Jatte died on June 7, 2002. He was a person who had an example of selfless service in front of people. B D. Jatte was known as a leader who is doing a right and good politics. All he called ordinary people with extraordinary ideas, and he named his autobiography “I am the model of my own”. Their birth celebration was organised in 2012
